And We're Off...

January 31, 2009

It is with deep appreciation, humility, and excitement that we write this, our final email, before we get on the plane to leap into ‘hyperspace’ for Mozambique this Monday (2/2/09). What a whirlwind of activity these last 6 months have been! We’ve visited 12 states, contacted with over 20 churches, and talked with hundreds of people.

Before we leave, we want to take the time to recognize God’s goodness and provision, and to thank Him for His faithfulness. God had the Israelites build a memorial altar when they crossed the Jordan (Joshua 3:4-7). These are our “rocks of remembrance” that we share with you today as a memorial of what the LORD HAS DONE! Our hope is that as you read, you too, will be encouraged! He’s has been at work in some miraculous ways:

• He’s raised up a team of 6 supporting churches, 80 financial partners, and 100 prayer partners… it’s a team of committed partners for a family of 5 in this economy in 8 months!
• We have traveled safely from coast to coast, sometimes seeing stunning beauty (like a double rainbow over the entire San Francisco Bay, sun dazzled hoar frost in hilly PA, and a ‘flaming’ Sears tower that appeared like a burning bush in the last rays of the day) as a benediction of sorts. We understand that ‘My sheep know my voice.’ He has spoken in ways that we can appreciate.
• He’s provided reliable renters for our properties in Detroit, buyers for our vehicles, and individuals committed to caring for ongoing needs (such as mail, property management) while we’re in Mozambique.
• He’s provided a vehicle and a house for us in Mozambique, and 2 travelling companions for our toddling, if high energy, journey.
• He’s given us favor with the Catholic Medical School and with the Mozambican embassy – our visas are cleared and in hand!

We’ve been surrounded by people who believe in what God is doing IN and THROUGH us, and who are actively helping us “get out the door” in practical ways – babysitting, technical support and assistance, house-cleaning, meal preparation, packing, moving, and giving words of wisdom and encouragement.

To all of you who have helped to make this journey possible, we say ‘Thank you.’ Words hardly suffice to describe our incredible gratitude for your endless support, encouragement, and love. We know that God is leading us to Mozambique, and believe that He’s done this so that “all the nations of the earth might know the power of the Lord, and that we might fear the Lord our God forever” (Joshua 4:24).

One house-keeping detail is in-line. As we are stepping out, we are depending on God and on you to step forward with us. In the same way that you take your commitment to partnership seriously, we do too. We anticipate working hard on behalf of Mozambicans and know that many of you are working hard here to help support us financially. Please note that from this month forward, we are financially flying on the commitments that you have made. If you are not certain how to make a contribution, please let us know. (You can do it on-line at World Vision or send them a check to the address below).

We look forward to continuing this faith journey with you all.

Love,

The Meyers
